New Tone Evaluation System

January 29, 2008

I have just initiated a new evaluation system to make it
easier to understand the tonal qualites of the rims I am
testing. There is a new article which describes the system
and I have applied the system to the "Sound Vault" which
has photos and recordings of the rims I have made and
tested.

Also I have revised the article entitled "Grenadilla: The
Ultimate Tonering Wood?" The main reason for the revision
is that I mis-identified the "Grenadilla" species used in
the Hartford banjo.

"Grenadilla: The Ultimate Tonering Wood?" article also
features a new link to a really interesting web page
written by Dick Boak, manager of the wood division for the
Martin Guitar. Mr. Boak discusses the difficulties
associated with identifying and procuring exotic wood
species for use in instruments.

Finally, the article "Testing Wood Species" has been
revised because the system I proposed for evaluating wood
for tonerings was too complicated and will never be
implemented (not enough hours in the day to do all that).
It has been superseded by the new, more managable system
described above.
